Rob Ward - Different Places
21st Sep. - 9th Dec. 2007

The current set of drawings and sculptures by Rob Ward combine marble sculptures and Drawings, which explore reminiscences, thoughts, shapes and colors associated with places the artist has lived and visited over along period of time. The drawings have the subtitle Smotherfly, an area of countryside where the artist grew up in Derbyshire, and portray particular places. The marble stones have a less particular reference point but were designed from objects in the Artists collection. They convey a sense of place, and reference different objects from nature and sculpture making resulting in new and imaginative objects and conjunctions. The drawings act as a field in relation to the sculpture, being highly colored against the whiteness of the marble. Rob Ward is the elected trustee of Royal Society of British Sculptors and the head of the Centre for Sculpture at the University of Leeds, Bretton Hall Campus. Rob Ward was born in Nottingham in 1949 and studied at Newcastle University (1969-73) and Reading University (1973-75). On graduating he won a Greek Government Scholarship and an Italian Government Scholarship to study at the Academia di Bella Arti, Rome (1975-76). His first show was at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle University, in 1969, since when he has had exhibitions throughout Britain, and in Australia, Canada, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan and the United States, plus a retrospective at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds in 1989. He is represented in private and public collections internationally, including the Newcastle Regional Gallery, New South Wales; Ferens Art Gallery, Hull; the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Northern Arts; Ironbridge Open Air Museum of Steel Sculpture; Grizedale Forest; and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
